The Technical University of Catalonia was created in 1972, replacing the Technical Institute of Barcelona created in 1969. It encompassed the Schools of Architecture and Engineering, which offered diplomas and degrees.

The School of Informatics was created in 1976 in order to teach the Degree in Informatics for the Technical University. It began teaching second and third cycle subjects in the 1977-78 academic year. First cycle students were admitted in the 1979-80 academic year. The Diploma in Informatics Engineering was created in 1988-89.

Within the framework of the Educational Reform, the new Degree in Informatics Engineering was launched, together with the two new diplomas in Computer Software and Computer Systems in the 1991-92 academic year.
