Usernames and passwords

Last modified: 14-06-2002

The username is the National Identity Card (DNI) number, but changing the first number for the a lower-case letter as indicated below:

0 -> a
1 -> b
2 -> c
3 -> d
4 -> e
5 -> f
6 -> g
7 -> h
8 -> i
9 -> j

If, for example, your DNI number is 35078643, your user name is d5078643. The password to access the systems is initially an eight character alphanumeric string, which is given to students on enrolment in a sealed envelope.

If you forget your password, you can ask for it at the Operations Service in the A5, C6 or B6 Buildings.

At the Student's Corner, the password is the same eight character string.

Change of password

Passwords may be changed from the Racó. Remember your password must be exactly 8 characters long.

Once a month, all Unix machines password files will be checked. Users with easy passwords will be asked to change them. If it is not changed in a week, it will be changed for an automatically generated one.

The purpose of this process is to avoid people gaining access to user accounts without authorisation.

The following guidelines are useful when changing the password.

  • Do not choose a word that can be found in a dictionary.
  • Do not use any personal details as the password (name, surname, user name, etc.)
  • Do not use old passwords
  • Do not use a word that would be easy to guess -- choose a word that would be difficult to guess, and easy to remember.
  • Do not choose a password that is less than 6 characters long.
  • Do not write your password down on a piece of paper or in a file in your work area.
  • Choose a mixture of lower and upper case letters and numbers. (e.g., Es3Sades)
  • Change your password often, especially if you think somebody has guessed it.

Try not to forget your password, since you can't access the system without it. If you forget it, ask the Operations Service to change it for you.
