SunRay

Last modified: 10-06-2002

The Sun Ray machines are in the following rooms: A5S109, C6S304 and C6S307. You will also find five quick access computers in the corridor on the way to the computer rooms in the A5 Building.

The way these machines work is simple. They don't need turning on, since they have no power button. All you need to do is turn the screen on and type the appropriate username and password.

These machines do not have any extra input/output device, such as a floppy disk drive, except for a slot for electronic user ID cards.

The Sun Ray machines need no maintenance, since there is no element that is susceptible to being updated or expanded. It is for this reason that the FIB has decided to implement this technology to replace the old VT terminals (text rather than graphics terminals)

More information on this technology is available at the following websites:

Access to the Sun Ray terminals with the UPC card.

If you insert the UPC card into the Sun Ray terminal, you can work with MOONREY as you would normally, with the added option of saving your session without having to logout. You need only remove the card, and the session will be saved for a certain time. The session will be available when you insert the card in that or any other terminal.

The usual steps to take are as follows:

Introduce the UPC card. The present session will be stored in memory, but will disappear from the screen. The system log-in screen will appear. Log in, and work normally. Log out and take the card out. Another possibility would be to take out the card without logging out, and the session will be kept in memory for 1 hr 15 mins. If you insert the card again before 1 hr 15 mins, the desktop will appear as you left it.

All enrolled students have access to this way of working. Lecturers using MOONREY for teaching purposes can ask to be registered by sending an e-mail to lcfibfib.upc.edu, with their name and ID card number.

Possible problems

  • Unreadable card.
If the system is unable to read the card, the following icon will appear. If this is the case, you will have to ask for a new card.

  • Card not registered.
If the card is not registered on the server, you must notify the Operations Service, or send an e-mail to lcfibfib.upc.edu, specifying the problem.

  • Maximum number of sessions with card.
There is a limit of 25 sessions allowed when accessing with a card. If your session exceeds the limit, a message will appear to tell you so, and it will return to the login screen.
