History

The Computing Laboratory was born at almost the same time as the FIB, in 1978, and is located at the PL Building, near the Torre Girona Building. The first computers were a DEC PDP-11/60 -- a magnificent 16-bit machine with 256 KB of memory and 52 MB of disk space on three huge drives -- and an EAI 2000 analogue computer.

A lot has happened since then, and as you can see from the other information sections, the equipment and staff have continually evolved in parallel with developments in software and hardware technology, in an effort to cater for the growing needs of its users. Over this period, the number of users has grown from 20 to almost 4000.
