Access via proxy

Last modified: 10-06-2002

The LCFIB has installed a perimeter security system, a proxy/firewall server, which allows all students to access the School servers over telnet, ftp or ssh regardless of the Internet service provider they are using. Until now, this was only possible with UPCNet connections. This server uses the SOCKS protocol Version 5 and accepts clients that support SOCKS v.5 and SOCKS v.4

It should be noted that the only services enabled when connecting remotely via proxy are: telnet, ftp and ssh. You can access the FIB website and the Student's Corner from anywhere, without having to go through the proxy.

With this software, you can access the following servers remotely: Alabi, Alaba, Ada, Alumbra, Moonrey, Fusio/Fissio* and the personal page server www-est.fib.upc.es (you can only access the last of these via ftp).

In order to establish the connection, you will have to install the client software on your computer. You will find this software along with additional information at the following URL:

https://www.fib.upc.es/LCFIB/Serveis/Operacio/Proxy/proxy-fib.html.

This page is secure, so you will be asked for your Student or Teacher's Corner username and password.

* In order to access the PC network, you must first connect to a Unix server over ssh or telnet, and then type the following command:

$ smbclient //fissio/username -U username, or

$ smbclient //fusio/username -U username.

For more information, use the man command for smbclient.
