PC account

The LCFIB offers three options when using resources for carrying out Final Theses in the PC environment. These resources must be requested by the thesis supervisor or lecturer in charge by filling in the appropriate form at the Teacher's Corner.

Option A. Standard PC network account

This option works in the same way as a standard student account, and includes:

  • an account on the disk server to save files,
  • access to the default printers in Buildings A5 and C6,
  • access to all software installed on the server.

This option does not allow the installation of additional software (except software which requires no previous installation in order to run, and that will run directly from whatever folder it is put in), since the system currently in place in the computer rooms means all local disk drives are wiped on boot-up.

Option B. Pre-configured hard disk

This option has exactly the same work environment as option A, but it does not use the PC's local disk drive. Instead, it uses a removable hard drive that is assigned to the Final Thesis student until the thesis is completed.

Using this option allows the installation of additional software, since this disk drive will never be wiped. This option should only be used if it is strictly necessary, since if any problems arise with the removable drive, the only support offered by the LCFIB is a re-installation of the original configuration.

Option C. Blank removable hard drive

This option can be used when the previous two are of no use (if, for example, a different operating system is required). The student is provided with a blank hard disk. Installing the necessary software for the Final Thesis and the installation and configuration of the system are the student's responsibility.

Students should consult its availability before making requests for non-standard software (i.e., software not mentioned in the other two options), by sending a message to lcfib@fib.upc.es, stating clearly in the subject that it is a question about your Final Thesis).

However, the only support offered by the LCFIB for this option is to provide the software for which licences are available, so the student can install it on the removable drive.
