Description of the PCs

The PCs in the computer rooms at the LCFIB are based on a remote booting system which enables them to boot up with various configurations and working environments. Currently, the following configurations are available, depending on the computer room:

  • Windows 98
  • Windows 95 with Visual Studio and Visual Fortran
  • Windows 95 (only A5S112)
  • Linux

These PCs require users to log in when booting up, so only users authorised by the Barcelona School of Informatics have access (students, teachers and administration and service staff).

The PCs are configured via a remote boot server that allows the same working conditions to be maintained.

Once the computer has booted up and the desired operating system has been loaded, the user can use both software that is installed locally and on the network. Users can then save their work on a personal account on the file server.

How to start working

The process to begin working on a PC is as follows:

Booting up, authentication and choosing the work environment
After turning on the PC, a process of verification and connection to the boot server is carried out, and a username/password dialogue is brought up in order to authenticate the user:

If the user is authorised (see Which rooms can be used?) a boot menu appears from which you can choose a work environment.

Choosing and loading a work environment

The boot menu always shows the options currently available. The user must press the key that corresponds to the desired option.

The work environment is then loaded. In normal conditions, the approximate loading times, for each environment is as follows:
    • Windows 98: Less than 6 minutes.
    • Windows 95 (with Visual Studio and Visual Fortran): Less than 6 minutes.
    • Windows 95 (only A5S112): Less than 3 minutes.
    • Linux: Less than 3 minutes.
