Network

The FIB computers are connected by a local network that links the School building (B6) to computer room buildings A5 and C6. This network provides access to the UPC network (UPC's computer network). This UPC computer network, which includes that of the FIB, forms part of the Internet.

The connection between the B6 Building and the main UPC network is via an ATM switch (a FORE) "ForeRunner LE155" over a 155 Mbps ATM link. You can monitor the traffic on this connection.

During the summer of 2000, the FIB network was completely renewed and new CISCO Systems computers were bought. Specifically, the old router and all the network access equipment (hubs, switches, terminal servers, etc.) were replaced by two high performance level 3 switches and thirteen 10/100 Ethernet switches, keeping only the aforementioned ATM switch for access to the UPC network.

We have a faster network:
The backbone of the network has gone from 155 Mbps ATM to Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps). The wide range of different computers used to access the network (shared 10 Mbps network nodes) have been substituted for switched ports that can be configured as 10 or 100 Mbps.
We have a more reliable network:
One of the weak points in the old FIB network was the fact there was only one router. Now there are two level 3 switches carrying out this task that, as well as balancing the routing load, provide the possibility of one router taking control of the whole network if the other should fail.
We have a safer network:
Having a network that operates under switching in its totality means that computers accessing the network without authorisation are detected, and the port they are connected to can be blocked.

B6 Building network

The backbone of the computer network is in the School of Informatics building. There are twoCatalyst 4908G-L3 routers, and four Catalyst 3548XL switches, which provide access to the FIB administration and service computers, plus the Catalyst2924XL, which bridges our Gigabit backbone and the UPC ATM backbone.

Also, all the servers for both teaching and administration activities are in this building:

UNIX servers
ALABI, ALABA, ALUMBRA, XINO (WWW server for the FIB), ADA, MOONREY, FISSIO, FUSIO, MORGANA (e-mail and student webpage server), etc.
NT machines
The CATSIS server allows students to work on the SQL Server.
Two Novell/Netware servers
ICARO and MORFEUS serve the FIB administration PCs.
Other machines
PCs, work stations, etc. that the FIB staff uses.

A5 Building computer room network

 

The network in basement 1 of the A5 Building consists of four Catalyst 3548XL switches. These offer 192 switched Ethernet ports, configurable to 10 or 100 Mbps, half-duplex or full-duplex, with a switching speed of up to 200 Mbps.

These switches form a Gigabit Ethernet stack and are connected to the B6 Building network through two fibre-optic cable links over Gigabit Ethernet. This double link allows the distribution of traffic and offers a line that can tolerate the failure of one of the cables.

C6 Building computer room network

The network in basement 3 of the C6 Building consists of four Catalyst 3548XL switches. These offer 192 switched Ethernet ports, configurable to 10 or 100 Mbps, half-duplex or full-duplex, with a switching speed of up to 200 Mbps.

Machines for teaching

The FIB Computing Laboratory currently has the following UNIX computers for teaching:

ADA is a SUN Microsystems Enterprise 450 server running a Solaris operating system with the following configuration:

  • Twin Ultra Sparc 2 CPUs (250 MHz)
  • 512 Megabytes of RAM

The machine is running Mathematica, Informix and VLSI design tools. This software is necessary for teaching Applied Mathematics II, DBD and DVLSI.

Its name pays tribute to "Ada Byron"

ALABI and ALABA are two Digital Equipment Corporation AlphaServer 2100 A500 servers running the Digital UNIX operating system. The machines are configured as follows:

  • Twin Alpha AXP6410 190 MHz CPUs
  • 256 Megabytes of RAM
  • 7 Gigabytes of hard disk

The machines run the C, C++ and Miranda compilers and the OSF/Motif libraries, among other tools. They also have a Java compiler (JDK) and Netscape installed.

These twin machines are used for teaching the subjects ISO, SO, CASO, DSO, AAD and DLP, and for supporting Final Theses.

ALUMBRA is a SUN Ultra Enterprise 2 server running the Solaris operating system. Its characteristics are:

  • Twin Ultra Sparc CPUs (290 MHz)
  • 512 Megabytes of RAM
  • 8 Gigabytes of hard disk space

FISSIO is a Digital Equipment Corporation AlphaServer 800 5/500 server running the Digital UNIX operating system. Its characteristics are:

  • Single 400 MHz alpha CPU
  • 256 Megabytes of RAM
  • 27 Gigabytes of hard disk space

This machine is the server for PCs running Windows, thanks to the ability its SAMBA server has to emulate the behaviour of Windows NT.

FUSIO is a Digital Equipment Corporation (now Compaq) Workstation 433au running the Digital UNIX operating system. Its characteristics are:

  • Single alpha CPU at 290 MHz
  • 320 Megabytes of RAM
  • 27 Gigabytes of hard disk space

This machine is the server for PCs running Windows, thanks to the ability its SAMBA server has to emulate the behaviour of Windows NT.

MOONREY is a SUN Enterprise 450 server running the Solaris operating system. Its characteristics are:

This machines acts as a server for the thin clients called "Sun Ray" in rooms C6S304, C6S307 and A5S109.

Support for network and communications services

These are the UNIX machines at the Computing Laboratory that support certain network and communications services

LASOLE is a Sun Microsystems SparcStation 10 mod 41 server running the Solaris operating system. its configuration is as follows:

  • 1 40MHz SparcViking CPU
  • 64 Megabytes of RAM
  • 2 Gigabytes of hard disk space

This machine is used to manage networks and communications.

Old UNIX LCFIB machines

These are some of the machines that are no longer used in the Computing Laboratory:

SOLETE was a Sun Microsystems SparcStation 20 UNIX server (SunOS 4.1.4 operating system) with the following configuration:

  • 1 HyperSparc 20 CPU
  • 64 Megabytes of RAM
  • 2 Gigabytes of hard disk

It has the following software installed, amongst other things: C compiler, OpenWindows, VLSI software and the Matlab package. This machine is now used to teach the subjects DBVLSI and SAC from the Xterminals.

AKRON was a Data General AViiON 5220 UNIX server (DG/UX 5.3 R4.11 operating system) with the following configuration:

  • Twin 25 MHz MOTOROLA 88100 CPUs
  • 128 Megabytes of RAM
  • 4 Gigabytes of hard disk

The following software is installed: a C compiler, the X11R5 graphics system, the OSF/Motif graphical user interface, and the INFORMIX 5.0 and Mathematica databases. This machine is now used to teach GEOC, MD and C from the Xterminals and DBD from the VT terminals.

AMOTO was a MOTOROLA 8640-2C3 UNIX server (running operating system V/88 R4.0 V4.2) with the following configuration:

  • 4 MOTOROLA 88100 25 MHz CPUs
  • 256 Megabytes of RAM
  • 2 Gigabytes of hard disk

It has the following software installed, amongst other things: the C, MIRANDA and Mathematica compilers and the OSF/Motif graphical user interface. This machine is now used to teach GEOC, MD, C and MP on the Xterminals.
